Two Lights above the Sea

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf

For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea--

(from 'Ars Poetica' by Archibald MacLeish; photo of the twin tower memorial lights taken outside my house in Brooklyn)

I looked up the whole poem, which is wonderful. However like many others I don't understand why he likens grief to an empty doorway and a maple leaf. An empty doorway maybe but a maple leaf?

There must be many empty doorways in New York homes which grieving relatives still stare at in the hope that one day their loved one will walk in as if 9/11 never happened.

A respectful reminder.
The maple leaf puzzles me also.
