Playing Nurse. Not the fun way.

I usually enjoy Theme Thursday and the writing prompt, and this week's--"bottle"--seemed so potentially rich and ripe with possibility. Alas, however, all that comes to mind today is the bottle of hot pink amoxicillin sitting on the top shelf of our fridge. This really has been a rough winter for us. We've been sick so many times--culminating in Hedgie's seemingly intractable strep throat that's now become scarlet fever.

Hedgehog just said..."It's like I'm trapped in a room, and the room is my body."...we've all had that feeling at some time or another, haven't we? The worst part is that there's nothing I can really do for her besides the usual pillow-fluffing and bringing of cold gingerale, cool compresses, and of course another festive round of hot pink fake cherry flavored antibiotics.

It could be worse--I think of poor Mary Ingalls, blinded by scarlet fever in the days before antibiotics. Actually, scratch that--let me not think of poor blind Mary.

Instead, I'll think of spring--although it's blizzarding outside right now, the trees are starting to show the first little knobs. It'll be warm again soon, and then there will be flowering dogwoods and ball games in the park and ice cream cones, fresh air blowing through the house from the open windows...

oh dear!
poor hedgie, poor leah!

two of my grandparents had scarlet fever and suffered weak hearts forever after, so i would be terrified (logic has no impact on that kind of fear)

i hope all is well soon

We all take our physical health for granted, and then get a nasty shock when we're laid low by something, feeling at death's door and waiting desperately for it to go away. I hope Hedgie recovers quickly.

I had strep that turned to scarlet fever just last month...no fun!

Hope Hedgie is better very soon. Antibiotics should do the trick!

Yeah, don't be a downer, Leah! Optimism!

At least in small doses, you know? ;)

I had no idea that scarlet fever still existed as an option! Poor Hedgie.

Sometimes I feel like I'm trapped in a Ferrari, and that Ferrari is my body. That's a complete lie, but typing it made me laugh.

Hope Hedgie is feeling better soon.

Tom: I am SO ready for February to be over!!! It seems completely blighted... : (

Kylie: it's extraordinary what antibiotics have done for our world. Scarlet Fever was a terrible childhood illness that often became rheumatic fever, and brought heart problems, blindness...but antibiotics have rendered it merely a minor, if sort of awful, infection. I'm not scared of it, just sorry for miserable E.

nick: you're so right. And children especially are somewhat blithe...although not Hedgie so much this winter, as she's been sick over and over again...

thanks for the get well wishes!

Betsy: you did!? That must have been awful. I am so sorry--glad you're all well again.

Jeff: I will take my optimism in a 1 and a half teaspoon dose along with the amoxicillin Hedgie is gagging on! lol

Tracey: it seems totally old world, doesn't it? But I gather it's pretty common. I'm amazed we've avoided it till now...

Hunter: you actually got a smile out of me! maybe even a giggle. Thank you.

Oh, Scharlach, hope the antibiotica will kill the nasty streptococci fast and effective.
My best wishes for the kid.

Poor Hedgie, and a poorly child is no fun for all the family.
I woke up without a voice on Monday morn, not a good thing for someone who earns a crust with his mouth, so to speak! I don't have a gig 'til Sat, and have been using basic sign-language and weird facial expressions to communicate until today, so I'm hoping for the best!
The two youngest daughters have also been on the bad side of healthy this week, an exam week to boot!
But, we have Disneyland Paris to look forward to in early May!

Get well soon little Hedgie. :¬)

I've been wondering where you were. Almost shot an email across your bow. All good wishes to Hedgehog. And just as another storm lashes us outside! It's too much! When our kids are older, they're going to say, "It doesn't snow like it did when we were young." And they'll be right.

So funny that you should mention poor Mary Ingalls. We JUST read that portion of the story a few nights ago. What a coincidence!

Yikes! I thought that was eradicted! I remember the episode well...no bad thoughts only good! Sending out a big healing hug to Hedgie and one for you Leah :)

Looking back (WAY back), I can hardly remember a time that I could open the fridge and not see a pink bottle.

One or the other of us was always working through something, seemed like.

Best wishes for Her Hedgeness! And you too!

You may well be thinking of spring hen, but your words and thoughts on paper are already blooming in the most magnificent of summers.

No signs of Spring on our trees yet.

A big kiss for Hedgehog and I wish I could nip over and read her a story. I know she can read herself but its not the same:)

Poor little thing. I feel for her I do. Had chronic tonsilitis as a kid and spent many a day having my pillows fluffed and vegemite toast being delivered to the bedroom. It doesn't sound like much but it's important having 'mum' around when you feel so lousy. I hope she's on the mend Leah.

I remember one winter I think it was 90-91--relentless in its bad weather and in my inability to string together a week where I wasn't sick--I remember feeling just like your daughter captive and oh, so tired of it. For you as Mom it has to be even harder, worrying, wanting her to be better and wanting the winter to lessen its grip. It will and she will feel better --she's lucky to have you to bring the pink bottle and chicken soup. Here's wishing you both spring if only in thoughts for now --thinking of open windows, warm breezes, dogwoods and daffodils. Health and happiness to you and yours.

Gorgeous, just the antidote needed for gloomy days and dark nights. Beautiful, Leah.

I'm so sorry for all the illness in your household this winter.

Scarlet fever is nothing to mess with. Poor little girl.

Spring will be here soon. It's just around the corner. Then life will return to normal again.

Stay healthy, and get through it one day at a time. I'll be thinking of you.

Oh yes, spring is on the way. I can feel it seeping into everything slowly but surely. You just have to be patient a little longer!

Leah, read the Tanka for TT ( it'll be up by then, heh... ). 'Tis full of spring imagery!

Pink bottle of amoxicillin...sorry friend. I know, I get sick little kiddos quite often too.

Although you're bummed about the weather, this post was actually a bit humorous!

Thanks for stopping by, Cop Mama! I think this may have qualified for Mama Guilt Monday, although it was posted on a Thursday...as in, my guilt over the second round of strep! As if a mama could prevent it...but still, we like to believe we could...
