Rainy Night in Late September

2:12 a.m. and I cannot sleep, just can't. Partly it's my brain on overdrive from the late-night cup of coffee that I swore wouldn't keep me awake...but partly it's the rain drumming on the skylight and occasionally dropping down the chimney into the fireplace. I love rain, and I don't want to miss it. Dinner is covered and put away, the dishes washed, everyone else in the house tucked in safe for the night, and it's cozy here on my couch, in the low lamplight, the dog beside me. The noise of the expressway is just a distant rumble, but the rain is really here, bringing finally a fresh scent of fall.

I know I'm going to regret this in the morning, when Hedgie wakes me at 7 a.m. with a demand for waffles! But right now, I just can't bring myself to say goodnight...

I'll be up with you tonight I guess. Am doing some work related stuff at home.

Best wishes in the night, night.

Excuse me but you're in the city that never sleeps, remember?

Hope you enjoyed your rainy night. How I would enjoy one of those, curled up on a comfy couch. Instead I had a restless night on a lumpy bed waiting for the alarm at 5 am to go to work.

Hope you find time to catch a nap today... and take one for me while you're at it! :)

On those nights, I make sure to crawl in bed by at least 3AM...I can get by on four hours when the kids wake me at 7, but any less than that, and I am a zombie.

And I, personally, treasure those hours when the world is my own.

Can I get bacon with those waffles?

Skeeter, I was glad to think someone was up with me, albeit a couple of thousand miles away!

Hi Megan, glad you're up too--that time difference thing again!

MJ, the city that "never" does apparently was...at least in my neck of the woods...even the muggers were snoozing...

Hey there Sarah! 5 a.m. is just cruel and unusual. I will take a nap for you!

Hi Murali, those alone moments are really precisely what I couldn't bear to end...although my husband got up and 3 a.m. and we watched "Totoro."

Bob, you can have bacon and even a glass of juice!

Hope your morning was not too brutal. Have a good weekend, and try to get a nap in there if you can.

Hmm ...
every second seems like a minute and every minute seems like an hour.
When I'm awake during the wee small hours it is like living in a different world. Strange noises and things happen that I wouldn't notice otherwise.
The worst part is coping with a fuzzy brain during the following day - i'm awake but function like an automaton.

Anyhow I hope that you got some sleep.

'bye,
Mark.

p.s. It is 7am Saturday morning here in HIGHETT. AFL Grand Final Day! Geelong vs Hawthorn. The Game starts at 2.30 pm local time. You can probably watch it in the States.
Expected temp. a balmy 26 degrees.

p.p.s. I am following your blog

I have been burning the candle at both ends. What you have described is what I crave every night. It's called silence...

I love this post. I love the photo. I'm a classic morning person, but perimenopause has introduced me to the night. What an interesting place. It's as quiet as my early mornings at the right time, but different. When I go to the market at 11pm (a wild time!), it's so different from 7 am. Lots of kids trying to buy booze and clerks who are very happy and ampted up. The world seems on fire. All the lights, all the activity. I never knew. I have a different perspective now. But the very wee hours of morn are as quiet as my memory of waking at 4am to start the day. And yup, I'm glad. I still prefer quiet mornings and wish I could sleep though the night, but life is life and it's important to enjoy all phases.

I'll take a waffle too. And honey, you have a good cup-a-joe?

;)

Hey Leah,
Thanks for the comment about the jasmine on my blog.
Yes it is really beautiful. The scent is still going. People coming to the front door just love the perfume.
Hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Hey Leah,
While at church yesterday the vicar, quite by chance, mentioned in his printed leaflet the problems of people enduring sleepless night. He then made reference to a certain Bishop Thomas Ken who lived about four hundred years ago and wrote this hymn:

"Glory to Thee, my God this night,
For all the blessings of the light"

"Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be".

"When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest".

"Sleep that shall me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake".

Perhaps you might like to remember this when next you have a sleepless night.
I hope that you don't mind me getting all religious on your blog.

Hello Mark! I don't mind one little bit, for though I may be, er, many-faceted, I do believe faithfully in God and very much appreciate the lovely hymn. I will share it with Sarge. In fact, I believe you have inspired a post...

Many thanks!

Hi baby. Thanks for your comment and email. I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Really. Thank's my dear, dear friend. Hope you're having a beautiful weekend in the mountains and looking forward to a wonderful holiday.

I love this comment page. Mark's post was moving, it's a comfort to see CSI here and know I'm not the only one with with my ass and head on fire at the same time, Skeeter always makes me exhale (now I know it's because he has long, hair!!!), Bob is always thinking about pork, and the rest are a constant joy. You have the greatest comment page.

Love you honey and hope you're having what's left of a beautiful Sunday evening in the Adirondacks. Sleep well. Why? Because you have to rest up for menopause!!! Good luck with that! What? You thought I'd lost my sense of humor???!!! Hell no!

XOXOXOXOXO ;)
