Opulent

Grandma Eva's ruby and diamond ring. It makes me feel almost decadent when I wear it, so I wear it nearly every day. Grandma's fingers were just a bit sturdier than mine, and so the ring has a tendency to slip to one side but I don't mind that it has a little life of its own. It sparkles most transfixingly under any light, and I have been known to stop and stare, surreptitiously, at my own hand while shopping for apples and cauliflower in the market...

I like to pretend that I am a once-wealthy lady, who has suffered a reversal of fortune and fallen on hard times, but who will never, never, give up her rubies...

  5. Wear it, wear it. You go girl.

It looks like it is a beautiful ring, from what I can see. Jewelry should be seen they say, and this one deserves to be seen.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

    God bless.

  6. To have something like this handed down...wonderful! And maybe it does have a life of it's own...nice. :)

  7. Lovely, I've got an opal ring with a little chip in it that was once my Grandmother's.

  8. Leah,
Your grandma would be proud to see her rocks on your fingers.
I have a string of pearls from my grandma....

  9. I don't wear rings... but it looks good on you!

  10. love the pics, gives them a dreamy feel, much like the day dreams when wearing them.

  11. Love your post. The second sentence is a bijoux ! You have no ring, you have an personnality on one finger that capture a sense of a woman. I'm sure you have your own personnality that can keep up with it. Lovely post. (Hope you can understand what I wanted to say, the dictionnary was not a big help on this one.) ;o)

  12. Wonderful post. Love the thought of the ring turning because it has a life of its own. Very sweet!

I read that once and laughed way too hard. Hope you enjoy.

Your post is lovely, and so is the ring if I use my imagination! And honestly, the photos are beautiful.

    XO

P.S. Thanks for not competing for the lobster socks because without you in the mix I seriously think I have a prayer in hell of winning. That's if Bob's having an "off" day and isn't wearing his glasses. ;)

  16. Oh, and yeah, for laughs let me echo what Kylie said.

Jeez Jimmy. You're starting to get a bit repetitious, man. You need to watch that in yer old age...

  17. It's good Jimmy's in England, otherwise hubby would get a run for his money.

    ;)

  18. Took me so long to write the first one Megan slipped in at the exact time I wrote the second one. She's #1. I hope that's not a foreshadow of what to take place over at Bob's. Damn.

  19. Colette--That's why I worry about wearing it hither and yon, but I just can't help myself, lol.

Devil--Thanks! I really think so too...

Megan--and it helps me in my daydreaming pursuits...

JB--*fans flushed face but feels undeserving of such an opulent compliment*

Kylie--I won't tell you again, Missy! Don't compromise my special Jimmy comments! They're all I've got! ; )

  20. Baino--yes, that's what I was going for--I felt a clearer picture would have been immodest, like a shot of fancy underwear!

Mrsupole--thanks for supporting me in my pursuit of bejeweledness...

subtorp--yes, I think maybe it does, between the slipping and the glinting and sparkling!

Clever Pup--I adore opal, but don't have a piece. I love that fiery center so much.

Auntie--you know, I do think my grandma would be happy that I'm wearing it. I also have a treasured string of pearls. Those are tucked away though.

  21. Just Bob--thanks sweetie! And what, no gigantic gold pinky ring for you?

Brian--very nice comment, I'm so glad I maybe captured the daydreamy feel...

Mariane--your comment was lovely, I understood perfectly! And you can feel free to comment in French anytime you might visit here--my husband is bi-lingual and can always translate!

NSCG--that's actually the word I sometimes whisper to myself when I look down and catch sight of the ring...

  22. Candie--thank you dear--

Wings--like a friendly ghost inhabits it, maybe!

Jaime-- i have one of my grandma's rings too - the first one my grandpa ever made for her. That is very intriguing! I would love to see a pic!

Willow--I thought exactly the same thing when I saw your gorgeous earrings!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Suzy--that is funny! And yes, I really didn't think I should pursue those lobster socks. Although I love them, to be honest...

Megan!!!!--I repeat what I have told my dear Kylie re: my dear Jimmy, see above. Jimmy and I have an understanding, see? He leaves me my special comment and I, well, I suck it down like some Glenfiddich. I guess that's not much of an understanding there, is it, after all. But unless you've got some fine single malt whiskey to leave here, well...

    ; )

Suzy--Jimmy's actually in Scotland, even more compelling--but since Sarge has a thing for Scots, well, maybe he'd give me a run for my money!

Jimmy--if you're back here for some reason, don't be too scared...

  24. A treasure from your grandmother, its wonderful that you wear it daily. Beautiful things are to be used, not squirreled away.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ahhhhhhhhh, Scotland. Now it ALL makes sense.

  26. Ahhh.. the green eyes is a terrible thing indeed. The hideousness of the green can sadly blind a person from the tongue-in-cheek way in which we Europeans convey our thoughts.

I'm still reeling over the fact that I was mistaken for an Englishman.
What a terrible terrible insult to lay at a man's feet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dude - don't lose it in the cauliflower at Key!

    Allison

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jimmy, honestly I'm not sure how anyone could mistake you for an Englishman. Hope that helps salve the cruel insult.

    but no offense, Suzy.

Allison--believe me, I've thought of that. The vegetable cases are a mere overlay, I believe, of some sort of circle of hell that lies beneath Key...I'd never get my ring back...

    xo

  30. I wear my father's wrist watch and sometimes his ring.
    There's nothing else left.

  31. Jimmy, Oh thank God. *goes back to pressing the skirt for Confession*

    ReplyDelete
  32. mago--I understand. I wear my dad's watch sometimes too...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just can't believe you need that much affirmation, Leah darlin'. Want, yes of course, yes, yes.

    Scots wha hae!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Megan--Must. Have. Affirmation.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Your daydreams are fabulous. You should definitely write a book about them.

    Please.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Did you knock Grams over the head for the ring? Just kidding. I just got off of Bob's blog and now I'm all sarcastic and stuff. Nice post.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love that jewelry that comes with sentiment. Very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Never say die and never give up those beautiful rubies. They are so sparkly. No wonder you are transfixed. You and Willow were on the same wavelength.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i do that too! (pretend I'm rich. lol.)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Karen--thank you! How bolstering.

    Cece--LOLol!!!!

MJ--but is it cubic zirconia or the real thing?!

Skeeter--indeed, it's the very best sort of jewelry. Haunted jewels.

Ronda--I know, isn't that funny? I'm covetous of those gorgeous garnet earrings--my birthstone after all!

Reyjr--right now I'm sitting in my castle, wearing ermine, and surrounded by my servants!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Right now I'm sitting in my shack eating an egg sandwich and surrounded by honery little boys. (The annoying neighbor kid is here.) But soon we will be going to The Museum of Discovery. That is our field trip for today. The boys are on sping break and I took the day off to spend with them. And that is our secret trip I have planned. Enjoy your day!

  42. Leah!!! Thank you for the adorable soup card from NEW YORK!!!

Sorry, I just forgot to tell you that. I got it a month ago. I'm horrible. :(

  45. Cece--I love an egg sandwich! I shall have my butler fetch me one at once.

Kris--yes, I do believe they are!

Karen--Don't worry! I'm glad you liked it. xo

    Robyn--hi dollface!

savannah--I'm wearing it even as I type this!

  46. Jimmy darlin', here, I found the Vaseline. That should sooth your Scottish ego. I'll let Leah rub it all over. That should do the trick! "Leah darlin', be gentle cuz Jimmy's sensitive."

Englishmen, Scottishmen, Irishmen? There's a difference? *Rolls eyes in head.* Good Lord. Megan, can you poor me some Irish Breakfast Tea please. Oh, and honey, I think I need a scone. You know us Polish/English...we get confused.

Jimmy, you know what's so damn funny, I've been so afraid to talk to you because you seem too damn smart for me and Leah's more your type. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh screw it. You ain't so bad and Leah's just a wee bit smarter! Hi honey!!! (She'll debate that you know.)

    XO

    ReplyDelete
  47. Suzy! Vaseline? Heaven forfend. Way too sticky. Plus that petroleum smell. I don't think I've ever even owned a jar!

Along with my high IQ goes high-end emollients.

I still support Jimmy's contention: Scotsmen and Englishmen are as different as dogs and hamsters. And I know which I'd rather have.

I'll just have to pretend Severus is a Glesga man from now on, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  48. A whole world of differences concerning the races of the UK then there are the lower sub-species of Catholic too.
The beaten Catholic Jacobites ended up joining the English army because there was no where else for them and so tainted the Scottish as merely another cannon fodder race like the Welsh and Irish, I'll write a book about it some day.

I sometimes wear my dad's old used condom.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Old Knudsen, I'll buy your book.

And yer dad would be touched I'm sure.

    ReplyDelete
  50. See, that's why Jimmy would never even notice me...I'd be "slip-sliddin' away in a sorta uncomfortable sticky way!"

I love you darling. You're the best. And no, I don't expect a visit from Jimmy soon!!! Thanks for the fun. You have such fun friends.
