A Little Push

Sometimes ghost stories happen in broad daylight. Apparitions appear in sunshine, their edges ruffled by a cold wind that springs from nowhere, on a city street.

It's happened a couple of times lately. This week, doing errands in the afternoon. I felt a push; a hand on my back, deliberately pushing. I stumbled, turned around. Not a soul in sight near me. No one anywhere, for half a block in each direction. Just me and the push. Not hostile, exactly, that push. But not exactly friendly either.

Then again, lying in bed, on my side, drifting sleep-wards. The hand on my back. All fingers against me, clearly palpable. And the push.

Who?

  3. That's a bit weird? I've felt it in bed sometimes and attributed it to REM sleep. Perhaps it was a 'push' that knocked me over two weeks ago and gave me a nice gash and a black eye.

  4. this is spooky cool...as long as it does not push you toward traffic...

  5. Kylie, I admit to being spooked. Intrigued, but spooked.

    Mago, I agree--not necessarily malevolent. Just...weird...

Baino--yeh, the sleepy time could be falling into that deeper sleep...but the time on the street was just plain unexplained...maybe your knock was a poltergeist!

Brian, I do hope it won't do that...lol

  6. who, indeed? I feel this too, sometimes. I had a dream last night with just this kind of thing inside it, except w/a hyper-realism about it.

  7. Thanks for stopping by today. I did not know that you were back.

I'll leave this festive plate of sliced cranberry sauce here on the table.

  8. Are you up to date on your mortgage/rent payments? They're an insidious bunch.

  9. Leah,

    Both image and incidents, creepy!

I like 'supernatural' accounts that happen on real streets, in real beds, like this.

(See the Irish film The Eclipse? Ciaran Hinds is in it. Has that sort of 'real' feel -- psychology and the weird.)

  10. Well, if you believe in that kind of thing, I guess it's one of your relatives. But who, and why do they want to make contact?

Can't say I have any experience of ghosts myself. Only things that go bump in the night.

  12. It had to be the same ghost both times, don't you think? Both times pushing your back seems too coincidental for anything else! Hmmmm...this one follows you about! Maybe it is nudging you to do something? Keep us posted! I agree..intriguing yet spooky, too!

  14. Stew! It's gone?! No! I want to read your story!

  15. Very interesting. Maybe they are just patting you on the back and don't have the touch/force thing mastered yet. Did someone you know pass away recently?

  16. Someone who thinks they're on the subway?

  17. The push has to mean something, possibly a hint to who it is.

  18. I strive in earnest to keep my mind up to the regulatory standards of an empirical skeptic. I refuse to watch any ghost-hunter shows on the telly or entertain any thoughts of passed spectral rellies watching me over my shoulder.

That being said my past experience as a pentecostile keeps leaking into my subconscience and that other dimension refuses to die completely. If I open that door just a smidge I'll lose all of the gains that I've made since the 80s.

It is a place which I fear to tread because I don't want to lose my footing. I suppose part of that is although I'd love to entertain the notion that protective astral friendlies have my back, but if they're there, that means that the "others" are there too.

You could safely call this my achilles heel so I wear really thick socks.

  19. LadyC, nice interp! Could explain the not-quite-gentle feeling...yes, my dad died a few years ago and I immediately suspect him...

    MJ, yes indeed.

Brandy Rose, I'm still puzzling over it. Very mysterious.

  20. Donn, interesting comment, that the supernatural and religion are bound up together, for you. I think in my case, I have separated my belief in ghosts from my belief in God, as the two seem, at least in my religious-spiritual schema, to be somewhat at odds. Very interesting differences, indeed.

  21. At odds? He threw them out and we have to deal with the bunch. :)
