Candie: thank you, it's a compliment coming from the lady of the lovely writing!
Terry: I try to snatch at the moment when I can...it comes all too rarely, and then, usually only in the middle of the night.
Baino: We strung little twinkly white lights in our front windows. Well, my stepdad did it for me. He's clever, and where I would have done a half-assed job, he rigged it so nicely. I'm drawn to sparkles too, I must say! Diamonds and white christmas lights, it's all the same!
Hunter: thank you! The photos I take at night--because I have got nothing but a point-and-shoot sort of camera, which I find endlessly frustrating--are a little dim and blurry, but then perhaps that's the essence of the feeling. As for the poem, I had not meant it to be a poem, but now I see it sort of is! uh oh, and I've tried so hard to stay away from writing poetry...
UB: You deal a little in rare books? What fun that is!!! Do you get to haunt the dusty stacks for treasure?
We do have some nice books mixed in with the well-thumbed hordes. Many, many signed books (my very favorites are from Edward Gorey and Allen Ginsberg--both of whom I met, although Ginsberg seemed much much more interested in my male companion...). First editions of our best-loved. And best of all, a really lovely very old Scottish edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. While probably none of these things are worth a ton, they have a certain resonance with me.
Peitseoga: That ripple is one of my favorite possessions. It was made with skeins and skeins of Rowan Cotton Glace in every imaginable color. I'm still rippling away, having just finished a ripple for Hedgehog, a ripple for a new baby, and going strong on a cashmere ripple and an autumny-colors ripple. Do you think that's too many ripples? ; )
map: never let it be said that we're not night owls!!!
Karen: I heart you SO much! You really have no idea how I treasure your comments. xo
nick: if you can ever find a Honey Crisp, I promise you won't be disappointed. They raise the concept of Apple to a heretofore undiscovered level. I fear, though, that their season is all too short...
MJ: lights around the heart would be lovely! I'm trying to think where next to festoon.
Having investigated, I see Honeycrisp apples have only been grown commercially since 1991 and supplies are still limited, so that's maybe why we don't see them here. Or perhaps the Royal Gala producers are freezing them out, the dirty rotters.
I was actually sitting here reading blogs tonight and eating a honey crisp apple! SO juicy. And just enough of a tang to make you savor it slowly and not rush.
i love those nights alone but i wouldnt be eating an apple. chocolate of the 70% variety is my speed. i'm sure there will come a day when i wish i had eaten more apples......
and yes, the point & shoot camera might be frustrating but it is giving you atmosphere
Maria: aren't they good? And you're right about that tang. I am obsessed.
Kylie: don't get me wrong, I love my dark chocolate! And in general, I really don't care for apples--but these honeycrisps can hardly even be called apples--
lettuce: thanks, and it's great to see you!
Mme deF: it is magical at night, but during the day it tends to be thronging with people. And it always seems like so many more than just three and a hamster!

how gorgeous that looks, sugar! it's quiet here, too and i will miss this time alone. xoxoxo
Wow, you really do have floor to ceiling books! My book collection seems positively threadbare in comparison.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away....
Blimey - that is a lot of books.
Good insulation though.
Sx
I didn't know you were a poet.
An intelligent mind, and the heart of a dove. Like pure nectar to the soul.
Finally someone who has as many books as we do!
That was beautiful....
I thought that was beautiful!
Lovely! Every evening should be spent like this.
What is that? So pretty. I'm so attracted to sparkly things. Must have been a moth in a past life.
I enjoyed both the poem and the photo.
Wonderful, as always.
Is that your library!? Yum. I'm a low-level rare book dealer and would love to thumb through that!
i envy your book collection!
your library/living room looks so cosy... love the ripple afghan, too!

sav: The quiet is so special. I like the rabble around me too, but at night the quiet is so nice.
nick: since I discovered Honey Crisp apples, I have been eating two a day. I wonder whether you have them there? They are SO sweet, crispy, and juicy.
Anyway, the books in the pictures are really only a small portion of our collection...
Scarlet: it would be good insulation were it not for the wind whistling through the gap in the window frame! Alas.
Pat: I didn't mean it to be a poem, exactly, but when I look at it it's a little bit poem-like I suppose!
Jimmy: ...and thank you for tolerating my over-emoting. I'm like a weepy drunk sometimes! And I'm not even drunk!
Abi: Thank you! I was sure we were likeminded on the topic of books!
I absolutely love that picture. So cozy, and magical. Reminds me of something out of Harry Potter.
And apples...
You ARE magical! I love posts like these, something about them tugs at the heartstrings and makes me feel all comforted inside.
I've never seen Honey Crisp here, although we get plenty of varieties shipped scandalously from the other side of the world. I like Royal Gala myself.
Ooooo...twinkly lights.
I have them on my hearth and around a doorway.

MJ--I mean "hearth." Golly, that was some Freudian slip, wasn't it.
Or maybe you’re having a Neil Diamond moment.
Thanks for that Neil Diamond moment. Is it a little scary that I actually enjoyed it?
As long as you promise never to wear Crocs, I am fine with whatever you do.
I solemnly swear...
Hi Leah,
That is an amazing image and you found just the appropriate words to describe the setting.

U: I hoped to capture the moment. It was a thoroughly beautiful one. I've been trying to see what's around me with a less jaded eye, lately...
Nick: The Royal Galas are yummy though, so it's not a complete washout!
beautiful picture
great post. i love those moments!
nice pic as well. hope you have a great weekend!
Take away all of those books but 5 and that is how many would be in my collection over the last 10 years.
I have been to Brooklyn, though! :)
A very comforting piece, like a warm bedtime passage from a mother. Thank you.
I love the lights in your window. Great idea!!! I love white twinkle lights.
....your sidebar profile reminded me that I wanted to make a pot of coffee!!
TA - Books!
Book envy...

Looks like an absolut bottle, thanks

how lovely
My idea of heaven. I think I need somewhere like that for myself.
Melanie: thank you and thanks for stopping by!
Brian: and I hope you had a great weekend!
otin: now multiply those books by 20 and you've got ours...
SF: what a lovely thing to say! thank you very much. And you are so right-it totally looks like an Absolut bottle, that is so funny.
Hit 40: coffee is an ongoing activity in my household, and in fact I just brewed up my after-dinner pot.
mago: the books threaten to eat us alive...if I'm missing, you know where to find me...
Megan: it's been a lifelong pursuit of insane proportions.
Maria: aren't they good? And you're right about that tang. I am obsessed.
Kylie: don't get me wrong, I love my dark chocolate! And in general, I really don't care for apples--but these honeycrisps can hardly even be called apples--

Crocs are a horrific scourge upon the fashion industry.
Poignant. Nice.
